It’s no secret that today’s parents face a digital dilemma.
We marvel at how our kids learn to tap, swipe and pinch (before they’ve learnt to tie their shoelaces or ride a bike), but at the same time we worry about what all this screen time is doing to them.
We spent our childhoods playing outside and staring at the sky, not at screens.
Our kids’ reality is just so different.
Every day there’s a new headline warning us of the harmful effects of technology on young minds.
The scare of the “digital apocalypse” makes us feel guilty + fearful about our children’s digital habits.
It’s no wonder that as modern parents, we’re riddled with techno guilt.
I’ve failed as a mum because I let my baby watch TV.
I let my toddler use the iPad and I feel so guilty.
I’m a “bad” mum because my son would rather play Minecraft than build a fort with the neighbours.
We’re bombarded with so many myths, misconceptions and misnomers when it comes to raising kids in a digital world. It’s hard to know who (or what) to believe.
And to further complicate matters, technology changes so quickly.
Just as we begin to understand the latest gadget or app they’re interested in, along comes the next shiny object, and we’re back to square one --
Confused, concerned and feeling guilty…
But who needs MORE mum guilt in her life?
(Not me. I’ve got a double dose already)
I’m Dr. Kristy Goodwin,
and I take the guesswork and guilt out of raising kids in the digital age. I arm parents with facts, not fears, about the best ways to parent when it comes to technology.
I help parents ditch the techno-guilt + raise happy, healthy kids who thrive online and offline.
As a children’s technology and development expert, speaker and author (& mum who also needs to wrangle her smartphone from her children’s clutches from time to time!) I understand the concerns and frustrations of modern parents (yes, I also deal with techno tantrums).
I translate the latest research into practical and digestible information for parents who want peace-of-mind and evidence-based information about parenting in the digital age (without having to ban the iPad or unplug the TV).
As parents there’s more to worry about than just keeping kids safe online. Don’t get me wrong cyber-safety is so important.
But as parents and educators we also have to think carefully about whether our young children’s digital habits are damaging their development.
I empower parents with simple ways that we can use technology with little ones
Whether we love it or loathe it, technology’s here to stay. The genie’s out of the bottle. The iPad won’t disappear and nor will the Internet (unless you secretly change the WiFi password).
We have to find helathy and helpful ways to use technology with young children.
I’m a researcher, speaker and author, delivering keynote addresses, seminars and workshops to parents, educators and health professionals throughout Australia. I’m on a mission to disseminate the facts and dismantle the fears about young children’s use of technology.
I provide practical, evidence-based information about what modern kids really need to thrive both online and offline.
